The 21st Century After School Program is directed toward improving students’ academic performance; increasing their interest in educational opportunities; enhancing their physical fitness; and, improving the relationships between schools, neighborhoods, and the community.
The program is a collaborative effort between Austin ISD, the Boys and Girls Club, and Austin Partners in Education along with other local nonprofit service agencies and businesses. Activities and experiences provided in the program include academic tutoring and homework assistance and mentoring. Additionally there are a wide variety of activities and clubs including, but not limited to, music, art, dance, sports, drama, cooking, photography, physical fitness, technology classes, family literacy experiences, and high school and career exploration courses.
Classes and other learning experiences are customized on a campus-by-campus basis to align with and reflect the developmental (age-appropriate), academic, social, emotional and cultural needs and interests of each school’s students and their families. The courses are also designed to address schools’ and families’ after-school safety and supervision concerns for the children and youth served by the program.
In addition, many of the clubs, classes, team-oriented experiences and family learning courses are focused on producing one or more products or services that will benefit the after-school program, the entire school campus, the immediate neighborhood or the larger community as a whole.

Literacy Champion volunteers meet with an elementary-aged student once a week to provide support in strengthening literacy skills through reading books and poems, writing stories and playing literacy games. Volunteers will work one-to-one with a student in 3rd-5th grade. An on-site coordinator is there to provide initial literacy training to the volunteer tutors and on-going support throughout the program. Literacy Champions will be taking place after school (3:00-3:45) at two campuses, Allison Elementary in south-east Austin at 515 Vargas Rd. and Sanchez Elementary, central Austin at 73 San Marcos St.

The program occurs after school from 3:00 – 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday or Thursday (depending on the school). This is an on-going commitment and helps to have volunteers that can commitment to a weekly schedule and be with the program through the school year. Program start date is early October.
