This optional training session for Partners in Math volunteers was held Friday, October 23, 2009, at the Austin Partners in Education office. The training was facilitated by John Thoms, AISD Positive Behavior Support Coach.
John is a highly experienced trainer, and he really custom built a training for our volunteers using the techniques he has learned through years in the classroom and supporting educators. His training focused on giving concrete tools that volunteers can take directly into the classroom to increase the efficacy of their time with students.
You can view the Complete Training Workbook, or follow the links below for more information on specific topics.
Building and Sustaining Relationships
- Building Connections - We all have strengths & weaknesses as volunteers. Use this list of best practices for connecting with students to identify areas where you can continue to grow.
Help Students Accept Mistakes
- Making Mistakes is Okay - Do you have a student who shuts down every time they don't know or make a mistake? Help them learn to see mistakes as opportunities by following this short script.
Setting Expectations
- Group Expectations - Do you sometimes (or frequently) struggle with behavior problems in your group? Identify these negative behaviors and learn how to turn them into expectations. Maximize the time you are able to spend working on math & positive encouragement.
