Classroom Coaching:  With just 45 minutes per week for about 24 weeks, our team of volunteer Classroom Coaches changes thousands of lives!

How Classroom Coaching works:
  • A team of coaches is assigned to a teacher, a small group of students, and a weekly time slot.
  • Each coach works with the same group of students each week and builds important mentoring relationships.
  • Groups work together on reading, writing, or math, depending on the program.
  • The teacher is available for support.
  • Classroom Coaches provide real world relevance to school work.
  • Students benefit from volunteers’ support and encouragement.
  • Every student in the class participates so every student benefits!
Frequently Asked Questions

How do Classroom Coaches help?
Coaches model success and provide real world relevance to academics. With a smaller adult to student ratio, Coaches are able to provide personal attention to each student.  Coaches build friendships and support students, teachers, and fellow coaches.

Why small groups rather than 1:1 tutoring?
Research shows that students who work in engaged small groups show increased participation and interaction, a deeper and more active learning, an openness to new ways of thinking, a sense of belonging, and the ability to learn from and teach fellow students.  And, with Classroom Coaching, each volunteer can impact about 3 students, a 300% increase in students served when compared to the traditional 1:1 tutoring model!

Is the curriculum aligned with what students are taught by their teachers?
The Classroom Coaching curriculum supports the AISD standard offering, leveraging success through smaller adult to student ratios.  Classroom Coaching happens in the classroom, monitored by the teacher, so both coaches and students have the expert in the room to ensure alignment and success.

Are Classroom Coaches given training?
Each program has a 2-hour training session where volunteers learn about volunteering in our schools, facilitating small group discussions, building mentoring relationships with students, and using the curriculum.

How are Classroom Coaches supported during each session?
Classroom Coaching occurs in regular class periods with the teacher present. Coaches work independently with their groups, and benefit from teacher assistance.  Teachers move from group to group and provide support on math or behavior management as needed.  Teachers often gain new insight into students' thought processes by observing their engagement with their group.

How are Classroom coaches supported between visits?
Classroom Coaches support each other and are served by the Austin Partners in Education program coordinator. Volunteer coaches meet together for a few minutes before or after classes to share experiences, successes, and challenges. Program Coordinators are available to answer questions and to provide suggestions and tips between sessions via phone, email and additional training offerings.
