Partners in Reading (PIR) is a volunteer program that helps 2nd graders improve their reading and increase their comprehension. In a structured
format, PIR provides opportunities for students to:
- hear what fluent reading sounds like,
- practice reading alound, and
- receive feedback on their reading
The program is supported by teachers and principals and enjoyed by volunteers and students.
"This was a wonderful way to help the classroom teacher with increasing reading fluency and basic reading skill. The children loved the program and gained a great deal without knowing they were learning. The students thought they were just having fun!!!!" (a teacher)
"[PIR] encourages students to work with other adults emphasizing to students that reading is valued in their community by individuals other than their teachers." (a teacher)
"This is a great opportunity to build a meaningful relationship with students and boost their reading fluency significantly, in a structured, organized, and efficient program that makes it easy to be a volunteer!" (a volunteer)
How does it operate?
- Volunteers work with a small group of 2-4 children
- Once a week for 45 minutes
- During the class day
- In the classroom
- Volunteers and students each have notebooks with materials to:
- Read poetry
- Read lists of commonly occurring words
- Timed readings
- The entire class participates at the same time (each student is grouped with a volunteer)
- Teachers are in the classroom for assistance, if needed
