Project Mentor Update:
Thank you for your interest in mentoring! APIE will begin processing your registration so that you are ready to be matched in the fall of 2007.
Since mentoring is a unique type of volunteer opportunity, APIE requires two people to serve as character references. Please have names and email addresses of two references available when you register.
To enter this information when you register click on the Authorizations and Affiliations tab. On the left hand side, you will see an area marked For MENTORS. Please click on it and enter the names and email addresses of your references.
** Elementary Mentors: please note that there are 2 pages of opportunities. If you do not see your campus, please continue scrolling down to click to the second set of records (51-100).
If you have any questions, please contact Christi Caballero, Mentor Program Coordinator, at ccaballero@austinisd.org or 637-0983.
With programs at over 70 campuses, School-Based Mentoring is especially relevant to AustinISD. A one hour a week visit can make a lasting impact on the life of a child.
Research shows that mentoring keeps students engaged in the learning process, reduces the dropout rate, and increases the likelihood of graduation. A relationship with an adult can be a primary reason for a student to stay in school.
As a Mentor and role model, you can inspire a child to develop new interests and career possibilities. Mentors also learn about the issues facing young people today, and develop a potentially lifelong friendship.
Although there are no special skills required to mentor a student, mentors are special people who want to spend quality time with younger members of their community. Mentors are good listeners, caring friends, and trusted adults.
Mentors make a difference. Youth who meet regularly with mentors are shown statistically to exhibit the following characteristics:
- Fewer absences from school
- Better attitudes towards school
- Less drug or alcohol use
- More confidence about school work
- Better chances of attending college
"This has been one of the most rewarding experiences for me and I'm glad that I am able to offer advice and serve as a role model."

"I think some people think they don't have the skills to help them with their students. They don't realize that it’s just being with them giving them a little time. It makes them feel so special. Thank you for letting me experience this time."
-Mentor
"I know I can always count on her. Also that she listens to what I have to say."
-Student
"I can talk to him about my life."
