Partners in Math is built on a concept of collaboration where learning communities are formed between teachers, students and volunteers. Each study group creates an environment in which teachers guide volunteers as they coach a group of students.
Volunteer math coaches are trained to lead student groups who help each other find information and solve problems. No need to remember all of your high school math, you will be taught right along with your students and teachers will often email the problems to coaches in advance.
In a Collaborative Study Group classroom, teachers present a lesson to volunteer-led student groups. The volunteer works with the students to support the content of each lesson. Each team has 4 to 5 students. Teachers remain available in the classroom to provide support. Volunteers work with the same group of students each week and build mentoring relationships.
The Volunteer brings relevance to the classroom. The community volunteers help facilitate group work, bring real-world experience to the lesson, and help students explore career options. Volunteer coaches work with the same group of students each week to build important mentoring relationships.
The Teacher provides rigor and continuity to the learning. Teachers and department heads determine the lesson plans and help guide volunteers.
The Student gains academic capacity and exposure to real-world experiences. Students help each other with academic concepts, learn to solve problems as a team, and gain the support of community volunteers who bring life experience to the classroom.
"I thought I was a horrible math student until you all started tutoring us. You broke it down, made it fun and showed us ways as it related to real-life situations. I entered Algebra with the idea that I was going to hate it, but now, it’s my second-favorite class next to lunch." --Student
"This is a good program, not only for increasing math ability, but also for providing examples of successful people who can share their experiences with our students!" --School Administrator
"The work that will get done is immensely rewarding and will energize you for the rest of the day." --Math Volunteer Coach
