TUTOR  || PROGRAM ASSISTANT

 
Math Tutor 

 

 

Hours per week:  varies.  Set schedules are decided upon during interview

Work Days/Times: M-F, between 8:00am-4:00pm, negotiable

Salary: Internship: unpaid, Work Study:  $13/hr. 

Start Date: 08/15/2011 (tentative - we will discuss by phone)

End Date: 12/14/2011 (Option to return for future semesters)

 

Job Description:

As a tutor, you will work with small groups of students in math in one or more schools. Our program accelerates the academic achievement of struggling students by providing the extra instructional support they need to succeed. This includes:

- High frequency tutoring in math (3-5 times a week)

- Individualized, focused small group learning

- Differentiated curriculum to meet specific needs

- Frequent monitoring to measure progress toward goals

 

Math Tutors.... 

  • Provide consistent, positive support as a mentor/tutor for 1 - 3 middle school students 

  • Attend initial training and receive weekly support from a dedicated program coordinator 

  • Build a strong foundation for future success, reducing drop-out risk 

  • Support teachers by providing differentiated, individualized lessons 

  • Apply interactive learning tools to engage students in building critical skills 

  • Model cooperative behavior to strengthen individual and group skills 

  • Encourage children to ask questions and think for themselves 

  • Motivate students by sharing your enjoyment of reading or math and making the concepts studied more relevant 

  • Show students you care about them and their academic success 

  • Celebrate student successes 

  • Act as a role model to children hoping to learn from you 

  • Experience the reward of knowing you helped another person 

Job Requirements:

While teaching background is a plus, prior tutoring experience is not necessary and all majors are welcome to apply! Training and ongoing support are provided throughout the semester. 

The basic and most important qualifications are as follows: 

  • Have aptitude in subject matter (tutoring materials are provided in advance so tutors can prepare). 

  • Be committed to making a difference in the lives of students in Austin ISD 

  • Be reliable and responsible 

  • Be able to commit to working for one or more entire semesters 

 

Times:  

There are timeslots that fall during the school day, with options Monday-Friday, between 8am to 4pm. We will work with each tutor to set up a fixed schedule that fills the classroom need and meets tutor’s availability. (Note: There are fewer opportunities on Fridays)

Transportation:  

All tutors must have access to transportation to the identified school(s) in which they work. The location options will be discussed during the application process to ensure a match.

 

 

Middle School Math Program Assistant

# Of Openings: 1

Hours per week:  15

Work Days/Times: M-F, between 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Salary: Unpaid if Intern, $13/hr. for Work Study

Start Date: 08/15/2011 (Tentative, final schedules coming soon.)

End Date: 12/14/2011


Job Description:

Assist the program manager of our 6th and 8th grade math program. Gain valuable experience in a fast-paced non-profit environment focused on promoting academic success for students in high-needs communities.

Responsibilities:

  • Providing administrative assistance and materials preparation. 

  • Assisting with planning, preparation, and execution of volunteer training. 

  • Making school deliveries and site visits.

  • Providing consistent and professional communication with math volunteers via phone and email. 

  • Volunteering in a 6th or 8th grade math classroom during the week. 

Qualifications:

  • Ability to multi-task and work independently to meet goals and deadlines

  • Organizational skills and flexibility a must

  • Interest in improving academic achievement for children in high-needs schools

  • Experience in working with diverse groups of people

  • Valid driver’s license with access to reliable transportation
