Looking for Volunteers to Read to Elementary Students

October 1, 2009, published in ¡Ahora Sí!, translated by Google

Every Tuesday, Emilia Vargas, mother of four children, comes 45 minutes primary Odom, south of Austin, to read to second graders.
"When my daughter was in second grade, I could not help her learn to read because she had a baby, but I was glad that (other adults) have taken the time with my child," says Vargas.

As a token of appreciation, decided to become a volunteer program "Partners in Reading" of the nonprofit organization Austin Partners in Education.

The program seeks volunteers who want to use 45 minutes a week to read stories and poems to children in second grade for reading and motivate them to improve their fluency and comprehension.  "This is the stage in learning to read and begin to use reading for their studies," says Miriam Mendoza, coordinator of the program.

One day a week, a group of volunteers meets with a group of three children in the classroom to read to the end and ask what happened in history. During this time of reading, the teacher of the group is there to help volunteers.

"For the kids love it and get sad when a volunteer is missing and can not read," said Emilia.

The program is currently seeking volunteers who are fluent in Spanish and like to spend time each week with a group of up to three children in various elementary around Austin. They are also seeking volunteers for the program in eighth grade mathematics called Partners in Math (or Companion of Mathematics).

For this program are not required to have advanced knowledge of mathematics, it is not about to teach the subject to small but to help them discover the solution to problems by asking questions. “ "In fact, it is better that students be taught to volunteers to listen to someone give them the answers," explains the program.

The third program of this organization is to prepare high school students for college and for this, seek professional help young people prepare their entrance exams to college and who are willing to talk occasionally with students on your college experience and career development.
