He's arguably one of the nation's best recruiters when it comes to the football field. Now Texas head football coach Mack Brown is recruiting leaders in the community to become coaches in the classroom.
Coach Brown is the spokesperson for the Austin Partners in Education program that aims to bring 800 classroom coaches into 100 classrooms.
"As you get a little older and you’ve kind of done your deal, you start looking at happiness, and I find that Sally and I are much happier when we give than when we receive," says Brown.
Brown’s friend, Karen Hughes couldn't agree more. She heard the call for help and signed up. The former advisor to President George W. Bush really likes how the program specifically targets second, eighth and 12th grade students.
"The strength of this program is that it puts volunteers in this program in the classroom at those critical moments that make the difference of success and failure for the rest of the school year," Hughes says.
Hughes and the selected classroom coaches will work one on one with the same group of students each week. The focus will be on reading, writing, or math.
But Classroom coaches will also get to share their secrets of success with the future workforce of America.
Hughes adds, "We're talking about the next Michael Dell’s, the next entrepreneurs, who are going to keep the state competitive well onto the next century."
Classroom Coaches will spend an hour in classroom across the city.
It’s a six month commitment, for only one hour a week, forever changing the game for Austin Public school students.
