Partners in Literature is a program built on a concept of collaboration where learning communities are formed between teachers, students and volunteers. Each study group creates an environment in which teachers guide volunteers as they coach a group of students.
Volunteers are trained to lead student groups who work together to discuss and analyze texts. No need to remember everything from high school English class, you will receive training and weekly materials in advance. All you need is a desire to help improve reading comprehension at the secondary level and a love of reading!
In a Partners in Literature classroom, the volunteer works with a group of 3-4 students to read and discuss a short text. Each week, the focus will be on a different strategy for promoting comprehension (e.g. making inferences, analyzing theme, connecting to characters etc…) and various texts will be provided. We will draw from a variety of genres from teen fiction to informational texts to contemporary poetry and hip-hop, but all texts are intended to engage reluctant readers. Volunteers work with the same group of students each week and build mentoring relationships. Teachers remain available in the classroom to provide support.
The Volunteer brings relevance and excitement to the classroom. The community volunteers help facilitate group work, bring real-world experience to the lesson, and help students explore career options. Volunteer coaches work with the same group of students each week to build important mentoring relationships. Volunteers can also share their enthusiasm for reading and help students become lifelong readers.
The Teacher provides rigor and continuity to the learning. Teachers and department heads determine the lesson objectives and help guide volunteers.
The Student gains academic capacity and exposure to real-world experiences. Students help each other with academic concepts, learn to analyze and discuss texts as a team, and gain the support of community volunteers who bring life experience to the classroom.
