Austin Partners in Education (APIE) delivers innovative reading, math and college readiness programs that raise student academic performance. By recruiting, training and deploying a diverse cadre of volunteers serving as tutor- mentors, students receive small group (1 – 3 students) instruction aligned with the AISD curriculum.
More than 1,850 students in 22 schools received a minimum of 45 minutes per week of academic and personal support in elementary and middle school reading and math from more than 800 dedicated APIE volunteers.
This year our deepest intervention was at Webb Middle School where we provided weekly Reading and Math Classroom Coaching, and high frequency tutoring through our pilot, Step-Up, serving struggling students. Webb MS Principal Reynaldo Garcia shared these results:
8th Grade Math Classroom Coaching.
- 85% of 8th grade students at Webb who benefited from weekly and daily APIE tutoring passed the math TAKS test.
- Commended math students tripled to 22% of Webb 8th grade students in 2010-11 compared to 6.8% in 2009-10.
6th Grade Reading Classroom Coaching
Fluency assessments revealed children in our 6th grade Classroom Coaching were reading across multiple grade levels, with only 27% reading at 4th – 6th grade level in December 2010.
By May 2011, 77% of the students were reading at 4th – 6th grade level.
- 50% increases in grade level fluency during the school year
- 22% increase in TAKS passing rate, with 64% passing in 2010-2011 compared to 48% pass rate in 2009-2010.
Almost half of the 6th grade students in Step-Up Reading passed the TAKS test for the first time ever.

Pictured above are Ana and Esmerelda, two students from the Reading Classroom Coaching program. The girls presented at Webb telling an audience from Impact Austin that APIE's Reading programs had improved their reading skills, grades, and confidence. They said the work with APIE was helping them be better students in other subjects as well.
