APIE Technology Programs help middle school students learn technology skills that promote self-esteem, academic success, and preparation for today’s technology-driven world. Students without access to technology at home, as well as students with the aptitude and desire to advance their technical knowledge, gain technology training and the opportunity to increase their digital literacy. In addition, the students learn valuable skills such as teamwork, collaboration and communication.
APIE also recruits and places volunteers who provide hardware and software support to Austin ISD schools as well as managing computer equipment donations to Austin ISD schools and students.

Dell Computer Corporation and Austin ISD have partnered to make AISD’s program the flagship implementation of Dell TechKnow. This program is a nation-wide initiative to build desktop computer proficiency in middle school students. During this 40-hour course, students take apart and rebuild a computer, install and use software, upgrade components and diagnose and fix basic hardware problems.
The Dell TechKnow program's primary emphasis is on bridging the digital divide by focusing on students without access to technology at home and by encouraging girls to participate at the same level as boys. The program includes all middle schools.
| Dell TechKnow Volunteer Commitment: |
|
Class days and times vary by campus, but on most campuses, class meets for 2 hours 2 times each week until the 40-hour curriculum has been completed. Volunteers assist the instructor by providing individual or small group assistance as the students learn to take apart and re-assemble a computer, load software, and troubleshoot the system.
Volunteer on your own or consider adopting a class with your co-workers. This is an ideal opportunity to form a team of volunteers to support one campus. The 40-hour commitment can be shared among a larger group of volunteers. Both English-only and bilingual speakers are needed. |
|
The Lay Technologist Program provides community resources to support the technology in AISD schools. Lay Technologists are special volunteers who must minimally qualify as an entry-level AISD PC support technician and are interviewed by AISD Network Systems and Support before assignment. Volunteers are paired with the school Technology Coordinator to support their assigned campus.
| Lay Technologist Commitment: |
|
Volunteer commitment is a minimum of 20 hours per month for at least 6 months. The schedule is determined on an individual basis. |
