Partners in Reading (PIR) is a volunteer program that helps second grade Austin ISD students become stronger and more successful readers. PIR provides volunteers, teachers, and students a fun and structured way to help children become stronger readers. Volunteers meet with their own small group of 2-4 students in the classroom for 45 minutes every week. Teachers are in the classroom and available for support.

Program includes opportunities to:
  • Practice reading and discussing a variety of literature, including poetry, with students
  • Provide students with feedback on their reading fluency
  • Engage in word study activities
Volunteer Commitment: Program meets for 45 minutes once a week beginning mid-October, 2008 and concluding in early May, 2009. Volunteers may sign up for a semester but preferably for the year (approximately 23 weeks). Teachers determine the day and time that they want volunteers in their classroom. Schedule information will be available in early September 2009.

Volunteer on your own or consider adopting a class with your co-workers or friends. Training is provided.

School Locations: The program operates in Title 1 (economically disadvantaged) schools city-wide. We can find a school to fit your schedule and location preferences.

Participants Say: "This was a wonderful way to help the classroom teacher with increasing reading fluency and basic reading skill. The children loved the program and gained a great deal without knowing they were learning. The students thought they were just having fun!!!!" -- Teacher

"[PIR] encourages students to work with other adults emphasizing to students that reading is valued in their community by individuals other than their teachers." -- Teacher

"This is a great opportunity to build a meaningful relationship with students and boost their reading fluency significantly, in a structured, organized, and efficient program that makes it easy to be a volunteer!" -- Volunteer
